Peace and Goodwill Today – Lafayette, Indiana (1911)

Mrs. Frank Perrett lived in Fayetteville, a village of Onondaga County of central New York State.

The village was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolution.

In December of 1911, Mrs. Perrett received a Christmas postcard from Lettie.

Lettie mailed the postcard from Lafayette, a city on the Wabash River in northwest Indiana.

Lafayette, and the companion city of West Lafayette (across the Wabash River), were also named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette.

The face of the postcard shows a bit of parchment on which a Christmas blessing is printed.

The printed parchment message invokes, “Peace and Goodwill in your heart today…”

The invocation continues with a call to peace and goodwill for the home, and throughout the New Year.

We have seen the same message printed on another Christmas postcard.

On the postcard above, the message was attributed to H. M. Burnside – but the postcard to Mrs. Perrett does not identify an author.

Beneath the parchment, sprigs of holly, in subdued tones, provide a backdrop to frosted letters.

The letters proclaim, “Xmas Best Wishes”.

On the reverse, Lettie signs only her name.

One hopes that Mrs. Perrett and Lettie found Peace and Goodwill at Christmas, and throughout 1912.
