“Pearl is Very Weak” – Detroit, Michigan (1911)

Mrs. J. C. Waldren lived in Hamilton, a village within a town, in central New York State.

The village is the home of Colgate University, founded in 1819.

In 1911, the area was a thriving industrial center, surrounded by orchards and fertile fields.

In May of 1911, Mrs. Waldren received a postcard from her sister in Detroit, Michigan.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of the Children’s Wading Pool in Detroit.

Before the sad decline of the industrial might of Detroit, the city was filled with beautiful parks and recreational spaces.

Other postcard stories relate to Belle Island and other scenic spots in the city.

On the reverse of the postcard, we learn that Pearl is now home, but that she is very weak.

The postcard does not indicate how Pearl is related to the writer or to Mrs. Waldren – it is possible that Pearl another sister or the daughter of the writer.

Mrs. Waldren’s sister, who does not inscribe or type her name, had access to a typewriter when these were not commonly found in households.

One might assume that the sister filled some secretarial function, except that her typing and spelling leave much to be desired.

Nevertheless, we are glad that Pearl is recovering and we hope that Mrs. Waldren was relieved to receive the postcard.
