“Political Trouble in Vienna” – Munich, Germany (1927)

Mrs. Chandler lived in Newark, the largest city and the industrial and commercial hub of New Jersey.

In July of 1927, Mrs. Chandler received a postcard from M. P. Benson.

M. P. Benson was traveling with others on a tour of Europe – joining thousands of Americans who went abroad as US prosperity rose during the 1920’s.

The postcard was mailed from Munich, which the sender found to be “beautiful”.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of the interior of the Hotel Rheinischer Hof.

According to the writer, this photograph depicts the entrance to the “pretty dining room”.

The postcard was printed and published by Max Stadler in Nurnberg.

The Hotel Rheinischer Hof is identified as a “family hotel”, but other postcard images on- line show grand public spaces.

Below, I include a small photo of the Dining Room and a drawing of the exterior that appeared on paper memorabilia for sale on an internet auction site.

There is very little information available about the history of the hotel in Munich; it did not survive World War II.

Hotels by the same name are operating in other German resorts.

Political instability in Europe affected the party traveling with M. P. Benson.

On the reverse, the writer reports, “Political troubles scared us away from Vienna…”

There were widespread riots in Vienna during July of 1927 as paramilitary forces of the left and the right clashed violently over the judicial acquittal of those involved in the fatal attack on two Social Democrats.

M. P. Benson did not seem perturbed by this crisis – he writes, “Tomorrow, “we go on to Oberammergau and Innsbruck”.

As this was not a year in which the famed Passion Play was performed in Oberammergau, the visitors would enjoy a lovely Alpine town.

The message concludes with other news – the writer is “feeling so well and enjoying every minute” and “Jeannette will be coming home soon”.

The travelers have not received any mail from Newark, but the writer expects to hear from Mrs. Chandler after they reach Innsbruck.

One hopes that the party enjoyed the other sites that they visited and that all returned safely to their homes.
