Portrait of Eugene Easterling – circa 1917

This postcard photograph was not mailed, but has a name and address inscribed on the reverse in the place for the address.

The man in the photograph is wearing a greatcoat that looks military in origin, although I am not expert in uniforms of the First World War.

The postcard is French in origin, which might be evidence that the postcard is related to a soldier.

The name is “Eugene Easterling”, and the location is “Ridgeville, SC”.

+ + + + + +

Ridgeville is a town in Dorchester County, of southeast South Carolina.

The town is about 35 miles northwest of Charleston.

In 1920, the town’s population was about 400.

Today, the population is about 1600; the largest employer in the area is a State Prison. Ridgeville has a National Historic Site -the Cypress Methodist Camp Ground.

I am confident that I have found Eugene Easterling, but I am not entirely certain that this is his photograph.

It would be helpful to find another photograph, an obituary, and a service record that established a connection to France.

RESEARCH NOTE

On August 8, 1890, Jacob Eugene Easterling was born in Dorchester County, South Carolina.

H was the son of Jacob Edward Easterling (1859-1942) and Angeline Mathilda Sweat (1859-1951).

Jacob and Angeline had seven children, four daughters and three sons – although one daughter and one son died in early adulthood.

Eugene was the fifth child and the second son; he lived with the family in Ridgeville until entering military service.

Having registered for the Draft in Charleston, Eugene was discharged from service in Charleston in November of 1919.

On June 17,1920, Eugene married Eliza Lucile Knight (1900-1959) in Ridgeville.

By 1930, Eugene and Eliza were living in Charleston with their only child -a daughter.

At the time of her death in 1959, Eliza is noted as having three granddaughters.

Sometime after Eliza’s death, Eugene returned to Dorchester County where he died at age 82 in July of 1973.

Eugene and Eliza are buried in the Bonnerest Cemetery of the Resurrection in Ridgeville, SC.
