Santa Margherita Ligure – Italy, circa 1936
This municipality (“commune”) lies on the Italian riviera in northwest Italy.
After centuries of invasions by Mediterranean pirates, Saracens, various principalities on the Italian peninsula, and by Napoleon, the area is still dotted with castles and fortifications.
It is now within the metropolitan area of Genoa in the Italian state.
In the comments, I add a contemporary picture of this beautiful spot.
Wine lovers will recognize the name as it denotes the region that led the revival of premium wines in Italy.
Although near to Portofina and other popular resort areas, Santa Margherita Ligure did not become a tourist destination until the years following World War II.
This postcard illustration was printed in Genoa by an Italian art publisher in the 1930’s.
There is an artist’s signature, but I have not yet identified the talented person.
A beautiful scene to refresh our senses on a Sunday in late Spring.
