Scenic Beauty for Betty – Front Royal, Virginia (1938)

Mrs. Betty Reed lived in Trevorton, a census-designated place in Northumberland County of central Pennsylvania.

In June of 1938, Betty received a postcard from the family of Issie, Ted, and Lizzie.

The postcard was mailed from Front Royal – an incorporated town, and gateway to the Shenandoah Valley of northwest Virginia.

The face of the postcard is a depiction of Mary’s Rock and the Skyline Drive near Panorama, Virginia.

The scene is printed in the “linen-style” – postcard stock that is rippled to resemble linen cloth.

The Skyline Drive was an enormous undertaking to create a scenic parkway atop the ridges of the Appalachian Mountains in the new Shenandoah National Park.

The undertaking was planned since the 1920’s, but accomplished through work programs of the Depression Era in the 1930’s.

The postcard was published by Marker & Bielfeld Inc.  of Frederick, Maryland.

On the reverse, the travelers express regret that Betty “…could not be with us on Sunday. Also, now”.

We don’t know what event Betty missed on Sunday.

It seems that Betty was delighted by the memento as she preserved the postcard throughout her life.

One hopes that the travelers continued to enjoy their excursion and that Betty had opportunities to learn more about the scenic beauty of Virginia at a later time.
