Teacher Gives a Christmas Greeting to Vera – Ephrata, PA (1911)

Vera Garmen lived in Ephrata, the picturesque community in Lancaster County of southeast Pennsylvania.

Founded by a mystic sect of semi-monastic refugees from Germany, Ephrata is about 8 miles northeast of the city of Lancaster.

The rich agricultural area was also distinguished by several remarkable springs.

Throughout the last decades of the 19th century, Ephrata was a popular resort destination and boasted several large hotels.

In December of 1911, Vera received a Christmas postcard from A. Gehman.

The postcard was mailed from Ephrata on December 23.

On the face is a medallion drawing of a winter landscape in subdued colors.

The pale scene is contrasted with a bright bunch of holly below.

A printed message proclaims, “A merry Christmas”.

On the reverse, Miss Gehman has inscribed, “From you teacher”.

It is difficult to tell if Vera was tutored by Miss Gehman in the public school or the Sunday School.

Many students received Christmas greetings in both places.

One hopes that Vera and her teacher, and all the pupils of the class, enjoyed a bright Christmas in 1911.
