The Boy and the Gilded Bugs – Lancaster, PA (1908)

We met Benjamin Stauffer in earlier postcard stories – he was born in 1900 and grew up on the family farm on the Millersville Pike in Lancaster County.

In March of 1908, Benjamin received a postcard from his aunt, Sarah Ann S. Stauffer, who mailed the postcard from another Rural Delivery Route outside the city of Lancaster, PA.

The face of the postcard is a whimsical bit of postcard art – a cherubic boy stands atop a wall.

The lad has an open container at his chest and he waves his hat at giant insects that swarm around him.

I cannot determine precisely what is occurring – it may be that the container is a lunch box, and the boy is warding off the hungry bugs.

The postcard was printed in Europe, but I cannot distinguish a publisher’s mark.

On the reverse, Aunt Sarah inquires about Benjamin’s health – it seems that he has been recently ill.

One hopes that the boy had recovered quickly and that he and his Aunt Sarah remained friendly correspondents for many years.

(It is very possible that this is so – Benjamin’s heirs had a large collection of postcards that had been saved by him.)
