The Clipper Ships of Pan Am – circa 1940

The story of Pan Am, once the largest and best-praised airline company in the world, is inherently interesting.

The role of the clipper aircraft is only a small part of the saga of this company’s extraordinary growth, proficiency, and sad decline.

The clipper aircraft were named in honor of the sailing ships known as “clippers”, the ships with shallow draughts and enormous sails that were designed for speed, “clipping” over the ocean surface.

(The clipper sailing ships dominated international shipping well into the second half of the 19th century, even after steamships were becoming much bigger and more powerful.)
