“The Girl on a Chair” – York, PA (circa 1910)

This postcard photograph was not mailed, and there is no written inscription that identifies the subject.

Sometime around 1910, a child had her photographic portrait made at the Penn Park Studio, then on West College Avenue in York, PA.

York, an historic city in south-central Pennsylvania, was served by many photographic studios at the turn of the 20th century.

The Penn Park studio created postcard photographs for hundreds of York County residents and visitors to York, and samples of the studio’s work are neither rare nor hard to find.

I prefer to find photographs that have names or other clues that can be researched and (sometimes) tell a story about the person in the picture.

Nevertheless, this girl was peeping out of a box of cheap vintage postcards, and I decided to share her image as an illustration of the children who were growing up in York at the turn of the 20th century.

Here, our heroine is wearing a white dress and has a white bow in her light-colored hair.

She stands on a wicker chair with ornamental weaves.

On her feet, the girl has sturdy black shoes -footwear for boys and girls was very similar in 1910.

One hopes that she grew up in safety and happiness, and that she had a satisfying life.

This postcard was disfigured with some tears and blots – I made digital repairs as can be seen in the original (below).

Label your photographs!

Your pictures, in whatever medium, are likely to outlast your life.

This little girl was familiar to those who collected her picture, and it seemed unnecessary to put her name on the photograph.

But, as in the case of many other photographic heirlooms, within a generation (or two), no one is able to identify her.
