The Nativity to Washington Boro, Pennsylvania (1924)

In December of 1924, Mr. Jack Schock was preparing for Christmas in Washington Boro, PA.

Washington Boro is a community in Manor Township, along the Susquehanna River, below Columbia, PA.

Jack received a postcard from Lancaster, PA, 10 miles to the east.

The sender was J. G. Aierstock, but the postcard yields no clues about the relationship between the correspondents.

The postcard, printed by the Whitney Postcard Company in Worcester, MA, features an illustration of the Nativity.

In a rustic setting, the Virgin holds the blessed child, attended by an ox and lamb.

The legend declares the birth of the King of Love.

The postcard had some damage to the face, most of which I could repair digitally.

The illustration appealed to me because it portrays the Virgin seated alone; it captures something of the vulnerability of a poor young woman caring for a new-born child.

One hopes that Jack and his friend enjoyed a blessed Christmas.

May all of us feel sheltered by Love at Christmas time.
