“The Ship is Fog-Bound at Sea” – Skowhegan, Maine (1939)

R. L. Baker lived in Omaha, the transportation hub on the Missouri River in east-central Nebraska.

Originally settled as a ferry crossing, Omaha grew in size and prosperity with the coming of the railroad.

In August of 1939, Mr. Baker received a postcard from Jim and Emily.

(We learn in the postcard message that the travelers are touring by bus.)

Jim and Emily mailed the greeting from Skowhegan, a town n the Kennebec River in south-central Maine.

The postcard message, however, indicates that the postcard was written in Bar Harbor –  the resort town on the Atlantic coast of east-central Maine.

The face of the postcard displays a drawing of a remarkable trout being pulled from a stony stream in a woodland setting.

A lone fisherman is landing an enormous fish, which is twirling toward the viewer.

This postcard resembles many comic postcards in which gigantic melons, berries, or other produce – along with huge alligators, deer, or other beasts – are presented as representative of the local environment.

Beneath the drawing, a couplet extols the excellence of the local sport:

In all my hopes and fondest wishing

I never dreamed of such perfect fishing

The image and the verse were copyrighted by the publisher, the Curt Teich Company of Chicago.

On the reverse, Mr. Baker is addressed as “Richard”.

Jim claims facetiously, “we saw this fisherman today”.

Jim adds, “(You) better come here and catch some big ones.”

The remainder of the message strikes a very different tone:

“The entire coast has been enveloped in heavy fog for 7 days.”

“Fog horns in Portland blew for 125 hours steadily”.

“S.S. Roma is 15 miles out with 500 passengers on board and cannot land.”

But, for Jim and Emily, the day is beautiful and the “bus is waiting”.

The group is heading to Rangley Lake, a natural wonder in the mountains of west-central Maine.

One hopes that Richard enjoyed the humorous postcard scene, that Jim and Emily enjoyed the rest of their tour, and that the fog lifted so that the stranded passengers could disembark.
