“The Spill” – Montreal, Canada (1910)

Mrs. C. H. Nesbit lived in Lewisburg, the lovely city on the west branch of the Susquehanna River in Union County of central Pennsylvania.

Lewisburg was founded in 1785 with a land grant from the family of William Penn and was a center of shipping and commerce into the 20th century.

In January of 1910, Mrs. Nesbit received a comic postcard from S. In Montreal.

The postcard features a drawing of a Canadian toboggan competition – one toboggan has overturned, spilling the players in awkward positions on the steep track.

The scene is entitled, “Typical Canadian Wintersports”.

In smaller type, a second title indicates that this is “The Spill” in the sport of Tobogganing.

I cannot see any indication of the artist; this is an excellent drawing.

Published by the Illustrated Post Card Company of Montreal, the black and white illustration may have been printed in Canada.

On the reverse, the mysterious sender asks, “How would this sport strike your fancy?”

One hopes that Mrs. Nesbit was amused by the postcard and that it provided a warm moment in the winter if 1910.
