The YMCA of Pasadena – Lamanda Park, California (1922)

In February of 1922, Henry and Addie visited California.

They stayed with Mr. Taylor, and Mr. Taylor’s son and his wife, at the Taylor home in Pasadena.

The travelers sent a postcard to friends or relatives in Ilion – the village south of the Erie Canal in central New York State.

Mr. and Mrs. James Brown lived at the corner of Third Avenue and second street in Ilion.

The postcard was published by the renowned photographer Edward H. Mitchell, of San Francisco.

On the face is a photograph of the YMCA building in Pasadena.

Although still a large, international organization, “the Y” does not seem to loom as large in the lives of individuals as it did in the early years of the 20th century.

On the reverse, Henry and Addie report that they “are having a very pleasant visit”.

They add, “we are both well and enjoying our trip.”

The postcard was mailed from Lamanda Park, once a separate community that was incorporated into Pasadena.

In 1922, Lamanda Park was connected with a railroad line to Los Angeles.

The community was surrounded by orchards and vineyards.

Several vintners were going out of business in 1922 due to the enactment of national Prohibition.

A fruit-packing business survived until later in the 2oth century.

One hopes that Henry and Addie continued to find pleasure in their trip and that they were able to share more stories with their friends in Ilion.
