“This Is So Sudden” – American Journal Examiner (1906)

The newspapers of William Randolph Hearst printed postcards as inducements to subscribers.

(Earlier postcard stories related to newspaper postcards which depicted the San Francisco Earthquake, the Territory of Alaska, and new American possessions following the Spanish-American War.)

Many of the newspaper postcards I have seen were not mailed, but this one was sent to our friend, Marie Chalender, of Cookstown, New Jersey.

I suspect that the postcard ran in the Hearst newspapers near Valentine’s Day, but it was mailed in May of 1906 from Philadelphia.

On the face, a comic drawing by Swinnerton shows a stocky and bashful boy presenting a Valentine to a blushing girl.

The legend reads, “This is so sudden!”

An earlier postcard story about Marie noted the large number of postcards related to romance and love that she collected – and, apparently, pasted into an album.

Hoping that everyone is surrounded by love on St. Valentine’s Day.
