“Today, You Are 4 Years Old” – January 5, 1922

A postcard greeting from exactly one hundred years ago.

Young Henry Rohoem lived in Quarryville, Pennsylvania, a borough southeast of Lancaster.

On January 5, 1922, Henry received a birthday greeting from his “Grandma Rohoem” who lived in Ronks a “census designated place” east of Lancaster, along the Lincoln Highway.

(It is about 13 miles from Ronks to Quarryville.)

The postcard, printed in the United States, bears an illustration of a vase of yellow flowers against a blue backdrop.

The design was copyrighted in 1920 by the prolific publisher, John Winsch.

A printed legend, “Birthday Greetings”, appears under a few fallen flowers.

On the reverse, Grandma Rohoem writes, “…soon you can go to school with the rest of your brothers and sister”.

“Be a good boy” is Grandma’s advice and direction.

One hopes that young Henry was glad to be greeted by his grandmother, that he enjoyed his birthday, that he did well in school when he was able to attend, and that he was “a good boy”.
