“Tommy Sends a Robin to His Brother” – Lexington, KY (1923)

Mr. Charles Orman lived in Lexington, the “Horse Capital of the World” in the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky.

In May of 1923, Charles was celebrating a birthday.

Charles received a postcard greeting from his brother, Tommy.

Tommy mailed the postcard from Danville, an historic city of central Kentucky that was the first capital of the state.

Danville is about 35 miles south of Lexington.

On the face of the postcard is a warm drawing of a pair of robins.

The birds are perched near a nest where four eggs are seen.

Above the drawing, there is a verse entitled, “A Happy Birthday”.

The couplet invokes “happy days” and “happy friendships” for the birthday celebrant.

On the reverse, Tommy writes, “Wishing you great happiness and joy for your birthday”.

He signs the message, “your brother, Tommy”.

Tommy saved the birthday greeting throughout his life, although the postcard suffered some damage over the years.

There were large faded spots (such as in Tommy’s message) and I made digital repairs to the frame and to discolored blotches on the margins.

One hopes that Charles enjoyed his anniversary and that the brothers remained friendly correspondents for many years.
