Valentine Daisies for Frank – Hollidaysburg, PA (circa 1918)

Frank Fox lived in Hollidaysburg, a borough on the Juniata River and the county seat of Blair County in central Pennsylvania.

This town, laid out by Irish immigrants in 1796, was an important transfer point between the Pennsylvania Canal and the railroads in the early 19th century.

Hollidaysburg is five miles south of the former Pennsylvania Railroad center of Altoona, PA.

Sometime around 1918, Frank received a valentine postcard.

(The two-cent stamp suggests that the postcard was mailed during the period of the wartime postage increase.)

The postcard was mailed on the same delivery route on which Frank lived, so we may assume that the sender was a neighbor.

(These hand-cancellation marks, without a postmark, were often made by the mailman on his route.)

Unfortunately, we do not know if Frank’s correspondent was a classmate, friend, or admirer.

The face of the postcard an ornate bunch of daisies and the glittery message, “Valentine Greetings”.

Many postcards that were adorned with glitter were home-made projects – the glitter was glued on by hand.

It may be that Frank’s friend had made this postcard with particular attention to him.

There is no inscription that would give us clues about the meaning of the postcard.

Frank preserved the Valentine throughout his life; we may assume that it had some pleasant memory attached to it.
