Valentine Devotion to Emma – Lancaster, PA (1909)

Miss Emma Humphreville lived in the charming and historic city of Lancaster, PA.

On February 10, 1909 Miss Humphreville received a Valentine postcard.

Emma lived at 231 West Vine Street.

This large (eight rooms) home was built in 1880 and is now a multi-family dwelling.

We met a Miss Marjorie Humphreville in an earlier postcard story – she was the Singing Teacher at Miss Witwer’s School on South Mulberry Street.

The school would have been close to the West Vine Street residence of both of the Misses Humphreville.

I believe that Miss Emma and Miss Margie were sisters, but I have not found documentation of that relationship.

This postcard was mailed from Lancaster, but we have no indication of the postcard being sent by a pupil, a neighbor, a fellow parishioner, or an admirer or suitor.

The printed inscription on the face reads, “With Love and Devotion to my Sweetheart”, but endearing messages were commonly sent – often in the absence of a romantic attachment.

Emma would have encountered a somewhat brighter image on the face; the postcard displays evidence of fading and foxing.

Here, the face of a curly-haired beauty is surrounded by a heart-shaped frame.

The frame is adorned with blossoms, and majestic birds circle overhead.

Published by the International Art Publishing Company of New York and Berlin, the postcard was printed in Germany.

Alas, there is no written message on the reverse -only the address of Emma.

I am glad, however, to learn of Miss Emma Humphreville and to know her precise address.
