“Veronica Is Having a Good Time” – Belmar, New Jersey (1937)

Mr. Stanley Poe lived in Tempe, a city in the East Valley region of Maricopa County in central Arizona.

The first European settlements of this area were agricultural communities on the Salt River that supported the garrison at Fort McDowell (1865).

Today, Tempe lies within the metropolitan region of Phoenix and is the home of the main campus of Arizona State University.

In August of 1937, Stanley received a postcard from Veronica.

The postcard was mailed from Belmar, a small borough on the Jersey Shore of east-central New Jersey.

The borough of Belmar attracts many visitors each summer who enjoy the boardwalk and the wide, sandy beaches.

A peculiarity of ocean currents has made the Belmar beaches well-known to surfers.

In the off-season, Belmar today hosts numerous art events.

The face of the postcard is a hand-colored photograph of a “Beautiful Road Scene Near Belmar, N.J.”

An unpaved lane, lined with trees, invites one to wander along the sun-dappled path.

The peaceful stroll might be interrupted to pick wildflowers that grow abundantly along the way.

The lush foliage and the absolute stillness are reminiscent of a country road in summer.

The lovely postcard was published by Samuel Strauss of Brooklyn, New York.

On the reverse, Veronica greets Mr. Poe as “Stan”.

She reports, “Having a good time for a couple of weeks”.

The postcard does not identify any seaside activities, sight-seeing excursions, or walks on rural lanes.

We are left to imagine how Veronica might be spending her time.

One hopes that she continued to enjoy her visit to Belmar, that she returned safely home, and that she later shared more summer tales with Stan.
