Wear Out Your Welcome – Landstreet, PA (1913)

Miss Nellie Lehman lived in Landstreet, a very small community that is no longer organized.

Landstreet was located in the mountainous area of Somerset County in western Pennsylvania – southeast of Pittsburgh and southwest of Altoona.

The post office in Landstreet closed in 1926.

In February of 1913. Nellie received a Valentine postcard from Sadie.

Sadie mailed the greeting from Somerset, a borough in Somerset County that was the center of the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794 and, later, a center of mining.

Somerset is a little more than 20 miles southwest of Landstreet.

The face of the postcard shows a large heart-shaped medallion, and four lines of rhyming verse.

Bunches of pansies complete the array.

The verse proclaims that the recipient is always welcome:

“Wear out your welcome

Be sure you will never,

You’re welcome Today

And Tomorrow and Ever”

Within the heart, is printed the declaration: “A Gift of Love”.

The postcard was printed in the United States, but there is no indication of the publisher.

On the reverse, Sadie asks, “How is Landstreet?”

Sadie wonders, “Have you attended many parties this winter?”

On the 14th, Sadie plans to attend a Valentine party.

One hopes that Nellie was enjoying life in Landstreet, that both girls participated in parties and social events, and that the two remained friends and correspondents for many years.
