Work Together for Good – East Andover, New Hampshire (1908)

Mrs. Guy Hersey was having a tough time in the late winter of 1908.

Mrs. Hersey lived in East Andover, an unincorporated community along Highland Lake in central New Hampshire.

In addition to her household work, Mrs. Hersey was now responsible for the care of Dorothy – a child who was sick.

On March 29, Mrs. Hersey was given a postcard from E. M. H. – whose first name is “Emily.”

It is possible that the initials represent another member of the Hersey family.

The face of the postcard is adorned with a colorful drawing of blossoms and a printed verse from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans:

“All things work together for good to them that love God.”

The postcard with a Scriptural quotation was published by the David C. Cook Company of Elgin, Illinois.

Not affiliated with any Protestant denomination, this publisher furnished Sunday School materials to many churches.

On the reverse, Emily greets Mrs. Hersey as “Nannie”.

Emily expresses her sorrow at the news “dear little Dorothy is sick”.

Recognizing how “hard it is for you to do your work and take care of her”, Emily declares that she would “like to come and help you if I could”.

Unfortunately, “the traveling is awful bad now”.

We don’t know if winter snow or Spring rains had made the roads impassable.

One hopes that Mrs. Guy was able to meet the challenges, that little Dorothy regained her health, and that conditions improved so that Emily could complete a visit.
