“The Admirable Car” – Rolling Prairie, Indiana (1916)

Mr. James Harris lived in Rolling Prairie, an unincorporated community in LaPorte County of northwest Indiana.

The name describes the terrain of the region, and was assigned by an early railroad company.

The community was served by a railroad stop until 1994.

Tolling Prairie is about 72 miles east of Chicago.

In June of 1916, James received a postcard photograph from “Daly”.

The postcard was mailed from Chicago.

The face shows a shiny automobile, with a man wearing a cap in the driver’s seat.

A group of women seem to be admiring the sleek auto.

On the reverse, Daly begins the written message with a joke, “If you don’t get this card, please notify us immediately.”

Daly then adds, “If I can’t take an auto out there, I can at least send a picture of one.

In a lighter penciled inscription, Daly adds, “say, Belle I thought I would send you this as I have another like it”.

The purchase of an auto was a big deal in the early 20th century, ad Daly seems to have had more than one postcard photograph printed in commemoration of the purchase.

I assume that Belle is the wife of James, and may be a relative of Daly.

One hopes that the auto provided years of service and that the friends maintained their postcard correspondence.
