“The Damsel’s Steady Boyfriend” – Comic Postcard (circa 1914)

We have seen a number of comic postcards that mock pretentions, “airs”, or other human foibles:

An Affected Actress”, “The Has-Been”, “The Hen-Pecked Husband”, “The Indifferent Waiter”, “The Untalented Artist”.

This postcard exposes the suitor who takes advantage of the hospitality of his girlfriend’s family.

On the face, we see a young man in a dark suit and a green vest being unceremoniously kicked out.

Our hero’s bow tie is askew, and his hat and cane appear to be flung after him.

A printed title identifies him as “The ‘Regular’ Fellow” – “regular fellow” meaning a steady boyfriend.

Below the drawing, a rough verse explains the situation:

“As some poor Damsel’s “steady”

You figure like a lord

Until the family gets wise

And shuts down on “free board”!

A signature identifies the comic artist as E. Weaver.

Very little biographical information about this prolific postcard artist can be found.

Weaver published from the late 19th century until the 1930’s.

Many of his designs were sold in sets.

This brief biography is found in a discussion of seasonal postcards:

On the reverse, we earn that the postcard is from the “Comic ‘Knock’ Valentine” series

The postcard was printed in the United States.

Someone collected and preserved the amusing postcard; it was never mailed.
