Miss Neva Walters lived in Clarion, the borough on the Clarion River in Clarion County of northwest Pennsylvania.
The first European settlements in this area date to the 1830’s, and the borough was incorporated in 1841.
This region, about 77 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, produced lumber, coal, oil, and natural gas in subsequent decades.

In April of 1911, Neva received a postcard from her Aunt Blanch.
The postcard was mailed from a place in Pennsylvania with a name ending in “ville”.
Unfortunately, the postmark is barely legible.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of a dapper couple either sitting or engaged in dancing.
(The white band across the face could indicate a low wall or bench.)
The young lady is wearing a close-fitting pink dress with a laced bodice.
One of her arms rests on the shoulder of her beau, the other seems to be reaching to touch his face.
The swain is wearing a double-breasted brown suit; the pant cuffs appear to be very wide – as we have seen in other drawings circa 1910.
Both figures are wearing dainty shoes with narrow points – a far cry from the sturdy laced shoes seen in many postcard photographs of the time.
There is a very faint inscription below the man, but I have not linked it to an artist.

On the reverse, Aunt Blanch greets “Dear Neva”.
After inquiring about Neva’s return home, Aunt Blanch asks, “How does this card sute (sic) you…”
Aunt Blanch reports that she “got a dandy postal card from Hattie F. the other day.”
Hattie and others are “all well” and Aunt Blanch is also.
The message concludes with the direction, “Ans. Soon”.
We know that Neva preserved the postcard in very good condition throughout her life.
One hopes that she and Aunt Blanch maintained a lively postcard correspondence for many years.
