Mr. John Ansbro lived in Cleveland, the great commercial and cultural center on the Cuyahoga River near Lake Erie.

In December of 1912, John received a Christmas postcard from Nora Burke.
Nora posted the greeting from Claremorris, then a small town of County Mayo in western Ireland.
(Claremorris has since become one of the fastest-growing places in the Republic of Ireland.)

In 1912, Ireland was still a part of Great Britain – and the postage stamp bears the image of the British sovereign.
The face of the postcard bears a photograph of a girl in winter garb, including a furry hood and cloak.
In her arms, the girl bears wrapped presents.
The postcard was published by the English firm of Valentine’s.
On the reverse, Nora inscribes a greeting to “Dear Jack”.
She wishes him, “a happy Christmas and a bright, prosperous New Year.”
The postcard was preserved in decent condition for more than a century, so it seems that Jack was pleased by the Christmas greeting from Ireland.
(There were marks and some damaged spots on the face which I repaired digitally.)
One hopes that Nora and Jack enjoyed a splendid Christmas and did find happiness and prosperity in 1913.
