A Country House for Christmas – Newton, NJ (1911)

Mr. Hampton Pullis lived in Sparta, a township in northern New Jersey.

Dutch explorers of the 18th century had discovered red clay in the area, and the mining of copper, iron, zinc, and limestone remained principal industries throughout the 19th century.

We met Hampton in other postcard stories:  he received a gilded birthday greeting from his Uncle John in 1908, a New Year greeting from his Uncle Theodor in January of 1911, and a comic drawing of a “hayseed” in 1914.

In December of 1911, Hampton received a Christmas postcard from Mr. and Mrs. William Pullis.

The greeting was mailed from Newton, the county seat of Sussex County in northern New Jersey – about 60 miles northwest of New York City.

Newton is about 8 miles west of Sparta.

The face of the postcard is a medallion drawing of the gates to a country house in wintertime.

The drawing is lightly-embossed.

Beneath the scene is a large sprig of bright holly and of mistletoe – and the printed message “Christmas Greetings “.

On the reverse, se find only the inscribed names of the senders, “Mr. and Mrs. William Pullis”.

From the collection of postcards sent to Hampton, one sees that several members of his family resided in this region of northern New Jersey.

On hopes that Hampton, William and his wife, and all the members of the Pullis family enjoyed a wonderful Christmas in 1911.
