“A Gilded Basket for Charles” – Lititz, PA (1907)

Charles Diehm was boy growing up in Lititz, the charming borough founded by Moravian immigrants in Lancaster County of southeast Pennsylvania.

In September of 1907, Charles was celebrating a birthday.

For the occasion, “Master Charles Diehm” received a sparkling birthday postcard in the mail.

The postcard, mailed from Lititz, was sent by Mrs. S. B. Erb.

The sender inscribed her name and “Birthday Greeting” on the face of the postcard.

A bright basket formed by flowers is beautifully-colored and gilded.

The postcard was printed in Europe.

If you have been reading these postcard stories for several years, you may recall the Diehm family of Lititz.

We have seen a Christmas postcard that was sent to Charles’s mother, Ada Diehm.

Charles Russell Diehm was born in 1902, the son of William Diehm and Ada B. Murr Diehm.

Charles had an older brother, Aaron, who died in infancy in the year before Charles’ birth.

The parents had no other children – which might contribute to the loving attention paid to Charles.

Charles married Eva Mae Dodson (1911-2005), but they had no children.

Having lived in Lititz his entire life, Charles was buried in the Moravian cemetery upon his death in 1978 (75 years old).

Throughout his life, Charles preserved an abundant store of lovely postcards he had received in his youth.

One hopes that this postcard recalled for him a wonderful celebration of his 5th birthday.
