A Gilded Toadstool for Herbert – Martins Creek, PA (circa 1910)

Mr. Herbert Fisher lived near Martins Creek, a census-designated place in the Lehigh Valley of east-central Pennsylvania.

Through the first half of the 20th century, the local economy was dominated by the manufacture of Portland Cement.

Sometime in a year near 1910, Herbert was celebrating a birthday.

Herbert was given a postcard greeting from Hattie.

The postcard was not mailed, suggesting that Hattie lived nearby or saw Herbert regularly.

The face of the postcard bears a charming drawing, brightly- colored and embossed, of a toadstool surrounded by a garland of flowers and four-leaf clovers.

The shimmering toadstool has been gilded.

Above the drawing is a legend in ornate script, “Birthday Greetings”.

Hattie has inscribed her name on the face of the postcard, but she added no message to the reverse.

One hopes that Herbert was pleased by the postcard, that he enjoyed a happy birthday, and that he and Hattie remained friends and correspondents for many years.
