A Jolly Good Fellow – Coatesvillle, PA (circa 1910)

We met Estella Dunlap (“Stella”) in other postcard stories.

Postcards that were mailed to her are addressed to Coatesville, PA.

In the early 20th century, Coatesville was an important steel-manufacturing center in Chester County of southeast Pennsylvania.

Sometime around 1910, Stella was given a romantic postcard by John.

Because the postcard was not mailed, we might assume that John lived nearby.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of a young man embracing a young lady on each arm.

The young man is well-attired in a suit; one young lady wears a lovely patterned dress in pink, the other wears a frilly blouse and dark skirt.

The pretty gals appear to be kissing the man’s cheeks, while he grins broadly.

Above this threesome is a legend, “For He Was a Jolly Good Fellow”.

We do not know what John intended to communicate with his postcard to Stella – that he was popular with the ladies, that he was a good sport, that he would like Stella to be equally flirtatious.

Stella seems to have enjoyed the sporting scene as she preserved it with her large postcard collection throughout her life.

One hopes that she and John remained flirtatious friends and correspondents for many years.
