A Roadster with Violets – Brooklyn, NY (1911)

Mrs. M. Rettig lived on West 40th Street in Manhattan, now a gentrifying neighborhood once known a “Hell’s Kitchen”.

In February of 1911, Mrs. Rettig received a Birthday postcard from her niece, M. Lenz.

The niece lived in Brooklyn, then (as now) the most populous borough in New York City.

The face of the postcard is a deeply-embossed drawing of a gilded roadster surrounded by blue violets and white forget-me-nots.

The figures are deeply-embossed, and lightly tinted.

Beneath the roadster, in gilt letters, one can read, “Happy Birthday”.

The postcard was “Made in Austria”.

On the reverse, Ms. Lenz addresses her “Dear Aunt”, and wishes her a Happy Birthday.

The Aunt preserved the postcard greeting in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that the niece remained a good friend and correspondent for many years.
