Aunt Etta Sends a Valentine – Quinsigamond, Massachusetts (1909)

Gerard Curran lived in Quinsigamond, a village adjacent to the city of Worcester – about 50 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts.

In February of 1909, Gerard received a Valentine postcard from his “Auntie Etta”.

Aunt Ettie mailed the postcard from Worcester, so she lived nearby.

The face of the postcard is an unusual drawing of a cupid seated in a field of blue flowers, beside an antique wall telephone.

Simultaneously, a white dove approaches with a missive in its bill.

It seems that mailed correspondence and the “new” technology of the telephone could both be employed to send Valentine messages.

Beneath the dove, the words, “To My Valentine” are printed.

Hand-written inscriptions, “To the One I Love” and “Gerard”, appear at the top of the postcard.

The postcard was printed in Germany by an unknown publisher.

On the reverse, Aunt Etta promises, “Will be down to see you some pleasant day this week”.

One hopes that the week included pleasant days, that Aunt Etta was able to make her visit, and that Gerard and his aunt maintained a friendly correspondence for many years.
