“Baby Is Getting Awful Fat” – Seneca, Nebraska (1912)

Miss Eva Simpson lived in Flushing, a village in Belmont County of east-central Ohio.

In July of 1912, Eva received a postcard from her sister, Grace C.

Grace mailed the postcard from Seneca, now an unincorporated community on the Great Plains of central Nebraska.

Seneca was built as a railroad center for the “Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad” in 1888.

The rail lines divided at that point, and a roundhouse and rail yard were constructed with a depot.

The community declined through the latter half of the 20th century, and Seneca dis-incorporated in 2014.

The face of the postcard is an uncolored photograph of the Baptist Church in Osage, Iowa.

Osage is a small city in north-central Iowa.

Osage is more than 500 miles east of Seneca – I do not know how Grace was connected to that place.

I am reasonably confident that the photograph was made locally -somewhere near Osage.

There is no indication of the photographer or the publisher.

(The church still exists, the building (now gleaming white) remains on North Seventh Street where it was erected in 1861.)

On the reverse, we learn about recent events in the life of Grace.

Grace acknowledges receipt of a letter from Eva, and expresses her gladness at receiving it.

Happily, Grace can report that, “we are all well as usual”.

There seems to have been a new addition to Grace’s family as she writes, “the Baby is getting awful fat”.

Floyd visited after the fourth of July, and Grace closes the letter by promising to answer Eva’s letter “soon”.

One hopes that the baby continued to thrive, that the families remained in good health, and that the sisters maintained their correspondence for many years.
