Approaching Storm – Safe Harbor, PA (1905)

Mr. Martin Funk lived in Safe Harbor, the community on the Susquehanna River in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

We do not know if Martin had a history of calling on a young lady, or if he was just beginning adventures in courtship.

In November of 1905, Martin received a humorous postcard related to a gentleman caller who lingers too long.

The postcard was mailed from Safe Harbor, so we know that this was a nearby friend or neighbor of Martin.

The face of the postcard shows a couple sitting tightly together on a love-seat in the parlor.

The clock shows that it is past midnight.

On the right, a determined father in his robe, and carrying a poker, is descending the stairs.

The legend reads: “Weather Reports- Approaching Storm”.

The young man looks frightened, and may be preparing for a rapid departure.

The postcard illustration was copyrighted in 1905 by the publisher, the Ullman Manufacturing Company of New York.

Because this postcard had no place for a message on the reverse, the sender inscribed a few words on the face: “Time to move on”.

One hopes that Martin was amused by the comic postcard and that his courtship experiences were free of “storms”.
