Begging for a Kiss – Bedford City, Virginia (1907)

Miss Ruth Oppenheim (possibly, Offenheim) lived in Bedford City, now the town of Bedford.

Bedford lies south of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and east of Roanoke and west of Lynchburg, in south-central Virginia.

In July of 1907, Ruth received a postcard greeting from Mexico.

There is no indication of the sender.

Due to an incomplete postmark, we cannot know the exact place in Mexico from which the postcard was mailed.

We know the year in which Ruth received the postcard from a receiving postmark on the face.

(I have digitally removed the receiving postmark, as it mars the face  – but have included the original scan.)

The face of the postcard bears a drawing of a couple sitting closely together on a wooden bench.

The young man holds the young woman’s face between his hands, as though he would like to kiss her.

The young lady has her hand on the young man’s arm, but does not appear to be struggling against his embrace.

The young lady, however, is glaring at him as though objecting to his impertinence.

A printed legend interprets the scene: ”Just One, Please”.

Although mailed from Mexico, the postcard was printed in Europe.

It seems that Miss Oppenheim was pleased buy the postcard as it was preserved in good condition throughout her life.

One hopes that her romantic adventures were successful and satisfying.
