“Children’s Day at First Baptist” – Hempstead, Long Island (1938)

Mrs. Donald Carter lived in Hempstead, a village within the Town of Hempstead, in Nassau County of Long Island.

Hempstead lies adjacent to the city of New York and for its first 200 years it was a supplier of agricultural products, including meat, vegetables, dairy products, and baked goods to the city.

At the time the postcard was mailed, the town of Hempstead was larger than all other cities in New York and the village of Hempstead had a population of about 19,000 people.

Today, the population of the village is near 60,000 and the area is home to significant diverse ethnic and racial communities.

In June of 1938, Mrs. Carter received a postcard invitation to a special program at the First Baptist Church.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of a charming stucco-covered building with a green door and matching shutters.

Flowers flank the doorway, and a brick chimney rises from the roof.

The entrance is shaded by a blossoming tree – the petals fall in shadowy forms across bottom of the face.

(This image resembles a lovely cottage more than it does a Church – unless this depiction was meant to convey the suggestion of a small, rural parish.)

Beneath the drawing is a printed verse from the second Epistle of St. Peter:

“Grow in Grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”

On the reverse, we learn the details of the planned event.

On June 12, the Sunday School hour would be devoted to “Children’s Day”.

Mrs. Carter is promised, “splendid singing and beautiful flowers”.

It is not clear if Mrs., Carter has children in Sunday School; this invitation sounds like one sent the congregation of the neighborhood.

If Mrs. Carter’s own children were involved, it seems to me that there would be more direction about delivering the students to the Sunday School.

One hopes that Mrs. Carter was able to attend the program, that the singing and the decorations were delightful, and that the children of First Baptist felt inspired and appreciated.
