Clara is Going to a Party – Elmira, NY (1911)

Mr. William J. Hoffman lived in Joanna, an unincorporated community in Berks County of southeast Pennsylvania.

The community of Joanna grew up around the Joanna Furnace, an iron-producing operation from the Colonial era.

The post office in Joanna closed in 1964.

In August of 1911, William received a postcard from Clara.

Clara mailed the postcard from Wellsburg, a village on the Chemung River in south-central New York State.

The face of the postcard, however, is a photograph of Eldridge park in Elmira, NY.

Elmira, about 8 miles northwest of Wellsburg, is a city that was connected – first by canals, then by railroads – to all the cities of western New York State and to Albany and New York City.

(Elmira never fully-recovered from the loss of local industries after Hurricane Agnes caused severe flooding in 1972.)

Eldridge Park was laid out in 1879 as a Victorian garden park.

The benefactor was a local physician, Edwin Eldridge, who wanted a beautiful place for his patients to explore healthful exercise.

In the 1920’s, an amusement park was established within the park – an historic carousel and many vintage rides were restored in the 21st century.

On the reverse, Clara reports that “we spent a day at this place”.

Clara (and unspecified others) received the letter from William.

Fortunately, none of the visitors to Elmira have taken ill – Clara writes, “we are all well”.

Clara’s group may be visiting friends as Clara announces, “we are going to a party tonight.”

William seems to be married, as Clara closes her message with a “hope you are both well.”

We may hope that Clara and her party returned safely to their homes, and that Clara was able to recount more adventures to the Hoffman family.
