Corning, New York (1909)

Soon after Christmas in 1909, Miss Ermina Schroeder received a postcard from her friend, Hallie.
The postcard photograph of Corning, New York was published by S.H. Knox and Company; the hand-
colored print was made in Germany.
Halley was in Corning, a city in south central New York State that had grown up around the Corning
Glass Works.
Today, Corning is one of the nation’s top small cities for the arts.
In 1909, the city had a less-polished appearance.
Ermina Schroeder lived in Hamilton Heights, at that time a more remote location in the newly-
developed upper west side of Manhattan.
The postcard address includes a reference to “The Helen”, which may be the name of the apartment
complex.
Hallie, although suffering from a cold since Christmas, planned to visit Ermina there within a week.
One hopes that Hallie recovered from her illness and that the friends enjoyed a wonderful New Year
reunion in New York City.
