Cousin Emma Vacations in “Splendid” Mount Gretna

Cousin Emma Vacations in “Splendid” Mount Gretna -July, 1923

I spent many happy days of summer in beautiful Mt. Gretna, and have a deep love of the place.

Earlier this year, I posted a vintage view of the Railroad Station in Mount Gretna and recounted a bit of the town’s history.

A Chatauqua community, Mount Gretna has hosted for many years a renowned summer music program and a summer theater season.

A juried art show has been a feature in recent years.

The Camp Meeting history of the community has been preserved in summer conferences and seminars.

In 1923, Cousin Emma was enjoying some of these events. She heard Don preach and later met for dinner.

She writes that, if she stayed a month, she was sure to get fat.

It is likely that Cousin Emma was staying at the Hotel Conewago pictured on the face of the postcard.

The hotel is now vanished, but the lake (and the quiet nooks) remains.

Mailed from Mount Gretna, this hand-tinted postcard was published by K. Dutwaller of Lebanon.
