Della Sends a Green New Year – Barton, North Dakota (1922)

Mrs. Carrie McGuire lived in Syracuse, the thriving metropolis in central New York State.

In December of 1922, Mrs. McGuire received a New Year postcard from Della.

Della mailed the greeting on Christmas Day in Barton, North Dakota.

Barton is now a census-designated place in north-central North Dakota – fewer than 20 people reside there today.

Barton was incorporated as a town in 1887 at a junction of the Great Northern Railroad.

A Post Office was established there from 1893-1964.

More than 200 people lived in Barton in 1910.

The face of the postcard shows a framed drawing of a pretty landscape -the grass is green as though the Fall has lingered or the signs of Spring are beginning to appear.

Beneath the lovely illustration is a printed greeting, “Best New Year Wishes”.

The postcard was published by the Gibson Art Company of Cincinnati, and the reverse shows the “Gibson Line” insignia.

Later, the Gibson Company became a major publisher of greeting cards.

It is likely that the postcard was not delivered promptly as the address has been corrected, presumably by the post office.

The street was changed from “Willet Avenue” to “Willis Avenue”, and the number from 818 to 878.

It appears that Della had corrected her own address from Oneida Valley to Syracuse.

In fairness to Della, she may have tried to copy the address from a scribbled note on the reverse of a postcard, especially if Mrs. McGuire had moved.

On the reverse, Della adds a cheery note:

“Wishing you a Happy New Year.  Everyone well here.”

One hopes that Della and Mrs. McGuire enjoyed a wonderful 1923, and that they remained friends and correspondents for many years.
