A Basket of Kittens for New Year’s Day – Patchogue, Long Island (1908)

Eva was in Brooklyn, New York, when she sent a postcard to Miss Doris Farrell for New Year’s Day.

Doris lived in Patchogue, a village on the south shore of Long Island- about fifty miles east of Eva.

The face of the postcard bears a drawing of a basket of kittens, surrounded by flowers, on a gilded page.

On the reverse, Eva expresses her feeling that Doris is “real mean” for not sending “a letter from home”.

It appears that Eva and Doris may be sisters, and that Eva has left the village for the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.

Clearly, Eva would like to receive news from Patchogue.

Despite her negligence in writing, Doris is sent the charming postcard.

Eva writes, “anyway, I wish you a Happy New Year.”

One hopes that Doris soon sent Eva a long letter, that the woman enjoyed the celebration of the New Year, and that the two remained friendly correspondents for a long time.
