“Douglas is Getting Ideas” – Hillsdale, NY (circa 1914)

This postcard was not mailed, but it is addressed to a postcard correspondent that we met in earlier postcard stories.

Miss Velma Magley lived in Hillsdale, a small city in east-central New York State – near the border of Massachusetts.

The hilly region around Hillsdale now encompasses Taconic State Park and the Catamount Ski Area.

We learned about Miss Magley in the postcard stories: “A Good Guesser”, “A Valentine Lasso”, and “Aunt Cora Sends a Thanksgiving Blessing”.

Sometime around 1914, Velma was given a postcard photograph by Douglas.

In the absence of a postmark, we might assume that Douglas was a nearby friend, classmate, or neighbor.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of a young woman reclining languidly in an armchair.

Wearing a close-fitted gown with a low neckline, our heroine extends a hand to a suitor.

The young man, who is in evening dress and who might be wearing a monocle, is pressing the fingers of the extended hand to his lips.

The photograph was printed in Germany, but the condition of the print is not the highest.

There are numerous “bubbles” on the surface, and small circles of discoloration.

I made digital repairs to the key areas around the amorous couple.

On the reverse, the message consists of a single query, “What do you think about this

Douglas has signed his name with a small flourish.

I assume that he hoped Velma might find the picture to be exciting.

Alas, I do not know if the postcard awakened any amorous toward the sender.

In any event, one hopes that the friends maintained a postcard correspondence for many years.
