Mr. Scott Brandt lived in Middletown, a borough on the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County of central Pennsylvania.

The community was named for its location at the mid-point of the Union Canal that was authorized by the Commonwealth in 1824 to connect Lancaster, PA to Carlisle, PA
The Union Canal facilitated an enormous increase in the shipment of goods and produce – which benefitted the rich agricultural area around Middletown.
In May of 1909, Scott received a postcard from an unidentified friend.
The postcard was mailed from Millersville, the site of the first Pennsylvania State Normal School, and a center of agricultural production near Lancaster, PA.

Millersville is about 30 miles southeast of Middletown.

The postcard is weighty, deeply embossed and filled.
A large purple flower is joined by a smaller flower and an uncolored silhouette of another blossom.
The applied colors include dazzling white, light blue, and a variety of purplish tones that add depth to the large flowers.
The well-crafted postcard was published by G. A. Novelty Art Series (which I believe is a form of the German American Novelty Company).
Printed in Austria, the postcard title contains an error in spelling –“Prindet”.
As one who transposes letters fairly often when typing in English, I sympathize with printers who are working with foreign languages.

On the reverse, we learn that the sender may be a student.
The writer weighs “whether I will be here for Commencement or not”.
We do not know how the deliberation concludes.
The message ends with a wish that has an unusual rationale: “May you enjoy old age a great while longer – is permissible by Science.”
Scott seems to have enjoyed the postcard as he preserved it in excellent condition throughout his life.
One hopes that he did enjoy a long life that was enhanced by advances in “science”.
