“Fat Man’s Misery” at Highland Park – York, PA (1916)

What a wonderfully descriptive name for the long flights of stairs at Highland Park in York, PA!

The city of York is the county seat of York County in south-central Pennsylvania.

(York is an historic city – it was the seat of the American revolutionary government when the Congress fled westward to escape the British occupation of Philadelphia.)

Soon after electric trolley service was established in York, the trolley company developed a “trolley park” in West Manchester Township (1891).

The trolley park, “Highland Park” boasted a Figure Eight roller coaster until 1917, and a carousel and Ferris Wheel until the 1920’s.

We have seen another postcard story showing the “Movie House” and other structures of this park.

This postcard of the 160 steps was made by the Rotograph Company of New York.

The postcard was printed in Germany.

Mrs. Bertha Hutton lived on a rural delivery route outside of York.

In October of 1916, Bertha received this humorous postcard from her sister in York.

The sister does not inscribe a name, signing her message “your sister”.

It seems that Bertha’s sister was trying to move within the city

Sister writes, “I expect by this time you are thinking I am out of this alley.

Unfortunately, sister continues, “I did not get the house”.

Among her other concerns, sister is missing her gloves.

Sister asks Bertha, “see if my gloves are in the buggy”.

One hopes that Bertha found the missing gloves, that Sister was able to relocate, and that the sisters maintained their postcard correspondence for many years.
