Flora Hays of York

(NOTE: Alert readers noted that this is Flora Hays Grim.)

Sometime around the turn of the twentieth century, Flora Hays sat for a photographic portrait at the studio of Simon & Murnane in York.

At the time of Flora’s photograph, the studio was located at 227 West Market Street.

I have other photographs from this studio at a different address.

It was not uncommon for photography studios to move to different sites in downtown areas.

The studio photograph was printed on a postcard, a common way for people to share their picture with others.

A thoughtful and intelligent soul inscribed Flora’s name on the reverse of the portrait.

I cannot decipher the middle name, which is unfortunate as it would help a genealogist to locate Flora.

NOTE: Readers identified this woman as Flora Hays Grim.

(I stupidly ignored the little arrow that points to “Hays” as the second name of three.)

If you were wandering through the city of York in the early 1900’s, you might have passed this charming woman.
