“George Sends an Autumn Rose” – Suedberg, PA (1909)

Miss Minnie Wagner lived in Suedberg, an unincorporated community on the Swatara Creek in Schuylkill County of central Pennsylvania.

A spur of the Reading Railroad once connected the settlement to the city of Lebanon.

The abandoned railroad line was finally transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Conrail in 1981.

The post office in Suedberg was closed in 1934, which makes this postmark somewhat collectible.

In June of 1909, Minnie received a postcard.

The postcard was sent by a “sincere friend”, George _____ .

(I cannot distinguish the last name – even after filtering the reverse to try to distinguish the pencil marks.)

The postcard was mailed from Suedberg, so we may assume that George was a neighbor or schoolmate of Minnie.

George appears to be an ardent admirer, based on the number of X marks he applied to his message.

The face of the postcard is an illustration of a large red rose draped over an autumnal scene – the trees still hold brown leaves, and there is withered foliage in the foreground.

There is no printed greeting, so we do not know if the postcard was in celebration of some event or milestone.

The postcard was printed in Europe, although I cannot distinguish the printer.

Minnie preserved the postcard in good condition throughout her life,

One hopes that Minnie and George remained friends and correspondents for many years.

On a whim, I began a search for Minnie Wagner.

Minnie married George!

Minnie Wagner (1891-1970) was born in Suedberg – the daughter of Robert Wagner (1855-unknown) and Katie Yoder (1855-unknown).

The seventh of eight children, Minnie had two brothers and five sisters.

In 1914, when she was 23, Minnie married George Edward Daubert (1892-1960).

The couple had six children, three boys and three girls.

Unusually, Minnie and George, and their children have pictures attached to the genealogical documents collected on the Family Search site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Here is a photograph of Minnie and of Minnie and George -from that site.

George is buried in the Church of God Cemetery in Suedberg, and I am hoping to find confirmation that Minnie is buried there with him.
