Girls from Lititz “Splash in the Ocean”

Girls from Lititz “Splash in the Ocean” -1938

In July of 1938, Luella and Eva Hershey were not able to join the other members of “The Gang” for a trip to the shore.

From their friends, the Hershey sisters received a postcard featuring the home of “Captain” Young, the entrepreneur who built the “million dollar pier” in Atlantic City.

(The title of “captain” was a courtesy; the savvy businessman and showman was a former lifeguard who built a spectacular home above the ocean on his new pier.)

The Gang, Mildred and Ella Mae Forney and Ruth and Sara Hostetter, were “having a grand time splashing in the ocean”.

The four friends mailed the postcard from Absecon, New Jersey on July 13; it probably reached Lititz the next day.

Someone appreciated the postcard and preserved it for more than eighty years.
