Grandfather Sends a Birthday Greeting to Ralph in Terre Hill

Grandfather Sends a Birthday Greeting to Ralph in Terre Hill – 1907

On February 19, 1907, Master Ralph Myers received a birthday greeting from his grandfather.

Ralph lived in Terre Hill; it appears that his grandfather lived nearby.

The birthday postcard contained a hand-colored illustration of a rural scene entitled, “Springtime”

The glittery greeting, “A Happy Birthday” was applied by hand.

(I am not fond of these early 20th century postcards with glitter applied, either as lettering or as a sparkling addition to the illustration. The glitter always mars the illustration with gouges and eroded ink.)

Grandfather signed the face of the postcard, which was posted from Terre Hill.

Ralph is easily found on-line.

He was born in 1895, making him about 12 when he received the birthday postcard.

Ralph served in World War I; a newspaper printing of the War Office overseas casualty list for December of 1918 lists Ralph S. Myers of Terre Hill as “wounded slightly”.

An on-line genealogical site shows that Ralph died in 1966 and was buried in Terre Hill.

One hopes that Ralph and his grandfather enjoyed the Spring of 1907.
