“Good Cheer” and a Red Cross Stamp

“Good Cheer” and a Red Cross Stamp – 1927

In December of 1927, Susan presented a Christmas postcard to Franklin Eby of East Earl, PA.

East Earl is a township east of the city of Lancaster.

It may be that Susan and Franklin were schoolmates; the Christmas postcard was not mailed, but delivered by hand.

Without a postmark, it would be hard to assign a specific date to the postcard, but Susan affixed a Red Cross stamp in the place of a postage stamp.

The Red Cross stamp is dated, 1927.

I remember seeing Red Cross stamps in the past; the Red Cross, I recall, was one of the first organizations to use stamps as a fund-raising method.

(Now, of course, one may receive great quantities of unsolicited address labels, promotional stickers, or decals.)

Before the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940’s, there were ongoing epidemics of tuberculosis around the world.

One hopes that Susan and Franklin enjoyed the Christmas of 1927.
