“Grandma is Watching the Yachts” – Port Huron, Michigan (1907)

Master John Siebert was growing up in Columbus, the capital city and center of commerce and education in central Ohio.

In August of 1907, the boy received a postcard from his grandparents.

The postcard was addressed “in care of Mrs. Louis A. Siebert” – presumably, the mother of John.

The postcard was mailed from Port Huron, a charming city at the source of the St. Clair River on Lake Huron.

This community grew up around Fort Gratiot which was established at this place on the southern end of Lake Huron after the War of 1812.

In the 19th century, the local population swelled as many European immigrants arrived to work in the lumber and ship-building industries.

The face of the postcard is a hand-colored photograph of sailboats engaged in “A River Regatta”.

The river must be the St. Clair River

The postcard was copyright in 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company.

Although mailed in 1907, the postcard has the “undivided back” that reflects postal regulations in the year of its printing.

On the margin of the face, Grandma has written, “Grandpa and Grandma watching yachts at Gratiot Beach”.

Grandma, like all good correspondents, adds the date, “Aug. 1907”.

On the reverse, Grandma inscribes her name, “Mrs. John Siebert”, and notes her location as “Gratiot Beach” in Port Huron.

There is no other message, but John saved the postcard in very good condition throughout his life.
